Creek Run developed a Remedial Action Plan (RAP) for a petroleum release site located in Arcanum, Ohio. Following site investigation activities and an evaluation of several remedial alternatives, activated carbon and bioremediation injections were selected as the preferred approach to address petroleum impacts identified in both soil and groundwater.

The site investigation determined that contamination was present within a relatively defined area surrounding the underground storage tank (UST) system and extending beyond the property boundary. Because the site remains active and portions of the impacted area are located near existing infrastructure, traditional excavation was determined to be less practical than an in-situ remediation approach.

Several remedial alternatives were evaluated during the planning process, including excavation, dual-phase extraction (DPE), air sparging and soil vapor extraction (SVE), monitored natural attenuation (MNA), and injection-based remediation. Based on site-specific geology, groundwater conditions, and the extent of contamination, activated carbon and anaerobic bioremediation injections were selected as the most effective and practical solution.

The remedial design includes the injection of PetroFix® and an electron acceptor blend throughout the impacted area. PetroFix combines activated carbon technology with bioremediation enhancement, allowing contaminants to be adsorbed while supporting naturally occurring microorganisms that break down petroleum hydrocarbons over time. This dual-action approach helps reduce contaminant concentrations and supports long-term remediation within the treatment zone.

To implement the remedy, injection points were installed across the impacted area using AEC’s in-house direct-push drilling equipment. The amendments were injected at targeted depths to address contamination within both soil and groundwater. Following the injection event, groundwater monitoring will continue to evaluate treatment effectiveness and track progress toward cleanup objectives.

By combining activated carbon treatment with enhanced bioremediation, the selected remedy is designed to address petroleum impacts efficiently while minimizing disruption to surrounding property owners and ongoing site activities.
